National Day of Prayer Celebration

“Pray for America–Unity” for the annual National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer has deep historical roots in this country, having been declared in 1775 by the Continental Congress in forming a new nation. It was later recognized by first President George Washington in 1789. In 1952, the Congress passed a bill proclaiming National Day of Prayer. And on May 5, 1988, President Reagan signed into law official recognition of the first Thursday in May annually as the National Day of Prayer. A broad diversity of prayers, songs and chants from many different religious and spiritual traditions on Kaua’i will ring out from the Lihue Civic Center Rotunda, 4444 Rice Street, Lihue Civic Center (the round building at the intersection of Rice Street and Kuhio Highway).
The Interfaith Roundtable of Kauai (IROK) includes representatives of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Bahai, Brahma Kumaris, Eckankar, Happy Science, Center for Spiritual Living, Fellowship of the Inner Light, Christian Mysticism, New Thought/Unity, Yoga, Secular Humanism, among others, and welcomes all religions, spiritual paths and spiritual education organizations.

Monday, April 2 – Thursday, May 31; 1:00 – 4:00 pm
The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) presents Florigium Society Plants of Paradise
Featured artists: Melanie Campbell-Carter : Esther Carpi : Jane Goldsmith : Veronica Fannin : Asuka Hishiki : Wendy Hollender : Robin Jess : Geraldine MacKinnon : Mali Moir : John Pastoriza-Piñol : Kelly Leahy Radding : Ariel Ramseth : Trudy Rehbock : Catherine Watter In the spring of 2017, artists from around the U.S., Australia, Chile and Japan came together for the second year of the NTBG Florilegium. Unlike other florilegia, artists spent two weeks working alongside one another, sharing and experiencing the garden together. This work session produced the stunning pieces being exhibited, today. Botanic illustration is a perfect example of the nexus between the arts and science, where accurate depiction is of primary importance but the artistry and intentions of the artist is allowed shine through.
Florilegia are steeped in tradition with roots dating to the 16th century. Some Florilegia, like the Banks’ Florilegium, record plants found on vast voyages of exploration. Today, they continue to be a vibrant, dynamic, and effective way of documenting flora from a particular region or collection in a botanic garden. NTBG is proud to support the tradition of botanical illustration through educational courses, internships, and special projects.
Info please call: 808-332-7324 ext.227 or visit https://ntbg.org/events/plants-paradise.
