Standing in the snow wearing their “rubbah slippahs”, EKK Fans in coldweather USA (and other countries) are trying to recall the warmth of sharing music with their Kaua’i ‘ohana. Let us help them!

EKK Fans, you have been enjoying and learning Hawaiian music and hula for 37 years. Now it’s your turn to share what you have been inspired to create by sending in a video clip of your singing, playing the ‘ukulele or guitar, dancing the hula, performing with your own circle of musical friends in your own inspirational setting … be it on the sandy shore in Ha’ena, overlooking the canyons at Koke’e, standing on a bridge in Portland, overlooking a lake in Michigan, on a rooftop with a panorama of skyscrapers behind you, sitting on an ice cooler in your garage anywhere in the world. Share your talent – “Show Your Stuff!”

If you are interested in participating in this virtual collective in this “Year of the EKK Audience”, email giac05@icloud.com and we will send you the particulars in how you can be part of this virtual talent concert. Don’t miss the train! Email us right now!

Travel is not safe! Large gatherings will endanger many! Our Hawaiian musicians need to be safe and avoid large crowds!
E Kanikapila Kakou as we know it will be on hold until we can be safe to experience the music together.

“May We Toot Our Horn?” — a message from Garden Island Arts Council

As this strangely convoluted 2020 year draws to a close, GIAC would like to review and share our work accomplished in spite of the many unexpected hurdles that we all have been facing.

We have put a hold on our direct appeal mail to GIAC membership at this time when “asking” becomes difficult.

Instead, we are sending this open letter of appeal to a wider audience who have been receiving our twice-monthly “Arts and Culture E-Calendar” which has faithfully brought to you up-to-date listing of events since 2005. We started this Calendar to help event organizers reach a wider audience for their events, but we get the most appreciative feedback from the attending audiences.

Our regular GIAC program of work, which included eight weeks of our usual ten-week E Kanikapila Kakou Hawaiian Music Program, completed its 37th year and received an unexpected but much appreciated recognition from HARA (Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts) with the Krash Kealoha Lifetime Achievement Award in Industry on December 6 of this year. No one knows yet what 2021 has in store for EKK at this precarious time. We appreciate the many inquiries from all over asking about EKK 2021.

In spite of the nearly empty airports, GIAC has managed to design and install window displays at the Lihue Airport including the “Malama Huleia” restoration project, “ … and how does your garden grow?” about the ingenuity of Kaua’i backyard gardeners, “One Man’s Artistry – Joseph Hoonani Kaauwai,” an airport security guard’s remarkable pen-stippled drawings on paper towels, and “A Gem of a Garden – Princeville Botanical Garden”. We have been working on a display about the environmental threat of “Rapid Ohia Death”.

Our “Van Go!” Mobile Art Room program, which has been taking the Arts into the schools since 2003, has been on hold due to the pandemic. Plans to assist teachers to plan and present videotaped art lessons for their students will soon be underway, thanks to the generous support of the Florence iwamoto Kaua’i Fund of the Iwamoto Family Foundation, our primary supporter of this program for over a decade.

GIAC’s visual arts program, Kauai Crafts Studio, has been busy and productive the past two years spearheading the two-part ceramic mural at the playground entrance of the Anaina Hou Community Park. Notecards featuring the artwork of the Ocean mural have been printed and will be donated to the Anaina Hou gift shop. The “stay-at-home” mandate has prompted Kauaians to spend more time on their own creative projects; this has brought renewed activity in the visual arts at the Art Pod Studio where many ongoing art workshops are being held. Firing all the hand-painted ceramic tiles for the Sparky Matsunaga Peace Park in Lihu’e was another contribution to the community.

Another community support project for the initial “Mental Health Awareness” event held at the former Sports Authority store was to coordinate and create inspirational decorations for the event.

The Shops at Kukuiula awarded a huge donation to GIAC for our assistance in “machinemachine’s” printmaking workshops for the community.

A major community project includes ongoing efforts to secure NEA federal funding to support programs for the “Art Hub” Community Gathering Place to be housed in the former Kress Store building, which is an important cornerstone of the Rice Street Revitalization project. Our early effort toward this end was to treat the public to an exciting “Art Feast” which included the on-site painting of a mural fronting the Kress Store renovation and a Keiki Mural activity. GIAC also supported the NirMANAFest Mural Painting project in Lihu’e town by providing the mural painting supplies.

In these days of austerity, GIAC continues its work as a strong community partner with its small army of dedicated volunteers. We ask for your support in any amount that we might continue the meaningful and worthwhile work to encourage, promote, support and inspire work that makes Kaua’i the special place that it is. The ARTS can do a lot to uplift spirits in this period of tension and uncertainty.

Contributions to help GIAC carry out its program of work can be donated on our website at www.gardenislandarts.org or mail your check in any amount to GIAC, P.O. Box 827, Lihu’e, Kauai, HI 96766.

The University of Hawai`i Community Design Center is working on a challenge to come up with designs for the L?hu‘e town areas and would like feedback from community members and specifically artists. Please feel free to take the survey and share with your connections throughout the arts and culture community on Kaua`i.

The information below provides more details on the project along with the ‘Take the Survey’ button. The following link will direct you to the survey as well. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MICD2021-Kauai

Mahalo for your time!

We are seeking your input to explore ways that we can better utilize our “public realm” for performing and visual arts as we plan for our post-COVID future.

This outreach is hosted by the University of Hawai?i Community Design Centerand Institute for Sustainability and Resilience, in partnership with County offices, with funding from the U.S. Conference of Mayors through the Mayors’ Institute on City Design Partnership.

We are reaching out to you because this exploration will include sites in L?hu?e Town. This brief survey will take no more than 5 minutes to complete. Responses will be reported in a way that will protect the identity of respondents. We humbly invite your perspectives and look forward to envisioning new ways of responding to our current challenges.
