Dr. Blay, a geologist and geoscientist, presents a dynamic talk on viewing Kauai and Hawaii as a giant time machine on a geologic scale. One can look at the current eruptions on Hawaii island to see what Kauai was like 5 million years ago. The Northwestern Hawaiian islands give clues to what Kauai will be like in the future. An ethnobotanist specializing in identifying the interaction between people and plants, particularly ancient Hawaiians, their land use practices and the native species they cultivated, Dr. Winter has done advanced work in relating botany and human history in Pacific cultures, particularly the awa and kalo plants.
