CALL FOR ARTISTS
The HSFCA is launching a call on CaFE for the Hawaii State Art Museum (HiSAM) Sculpture Garden. Through this call, the HSFCA intends to establish a qualified pool of individual professional artists for consideration for various 2D and 3D sites in the HiSAM Sculpture Garden.
The HSFCA urges Hawaii visual artists to register and apply to the call on CaFE (www.callforentry.org), a website developed by the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) to facilitate calls for artists and artwork. The CaFE registration is free, secure and offers access to visual arts opportunities nationwide.
The website can be found at www.callforentry.org and provides information about CaFE, answers to FAQ’s, tech tips, image prep and a questions forum.

The Shepherd’s Play” – a gift to the community

directed by Bruce Fehring

Church of the Pacific, Princeville

Free event

The tradition of the Shepherd’s Play dates back to medieval Europe and it is one of a cycle of three plays: The Paradise Play, The Shepherd’s Play, and The Three Kings Play. The cycle was kept alive into the 17th century on the island of Oberufer on the Danube where the small island community formed the acting company. With great fanfare and revelry, the company would proceed through the town in song, leading the townspeople to the performances. The plays were an all-community celebration, and we have continued that spirit of celebration as our troop has begun the tradition of  performing the Shepherd’s Play each year as a gift to the Kauai community. The story is a familiar one, for it is a Nativity play, told from the point of view of the shepherds. Within this tale we meet archetypal characters, who through their experiences are called upon to act out of their noble nature. These rough, simple folk, in the growing darkness of the long winter nights, find the spark of light which shines forth through fraternity and carries hope for the future. It is a tale of personal transformation leading from earthly baseness to enlightened inspiration.

Dorothy Hinshaw Patent Writing Workshop

Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens

Do you long to express your love of Hawai’i with the written word? Here’s your chance to unleash your creativity by spending a day with author and teacher Dorothy Hinshaw Patent and fellow writers exploring the wonders of Hawai’i’s native plant life in words.  A biologist as well as an author, Dorothy will combine her knowledge of plants with invaluable writing tips and techniques to help you write expressively about this precious natural resource.  She’ll share techniques that will help you sharpen your observations, reactions, and ideas; find

the focus for your writing; and create a fresh piece of work that will express your own unique creativity.  By the end of the day, you’ll have a new appreciation for the island’s lush vegetation and for your own ability to express yourself through the written word.
