Graduating from the University of Wisconsin in Mechanical Engineering, Charlie worked as an HVAC design engineer for commercial and industrial projects. His focus turned to energy conservation and efficiency, and he started consulting on international projects for USAID, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development. He worked on and managed numerous energy projects in Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Serbia, Macedonia, Philippines, Ukraine, Armenia, Russia and India. He spent over one and a half years on several projects in Ukraine, and was resident project manager for USAID in India in 2000 – 2001. He and Sue moved to Kauai in 2013, where Charlie continued to consult electronically to an electrical/gas utility in Wisconsin, finally retiring in 2023. He also briefly consulted with the Hawai’i Energy public benefits program in Honolulu. On Kauai he’s been very active in senior softball, serving as the league coordinator for several years, scheduling playing fields and games for 21 senior teams. He and Sue began volunteering with EKK in 2014, but stopped following the covid outbreak. They both resumed volunteering with EKK in 2026. He also volunteers with the Hawaiian Monk Seal recovery program, and annually volunteers with the Kauai Pedal to the Meadow bicycle race, the Kauai Marathon race, and the Ironman Wisconsin event.
