Leathers Associates who built the Kamalani Playground, Kamalani Bridge and Kamalani Pavilion in Lydgate is building a beautiful new themed playground for Kauai’s keiki, families and visitors.
They need volunteers in this community effort.
Skilled and unskilled helpers are needed; no experience necessary. Childcare is available for ages 5+ years and children 10+ years can work alongside parents on the construction site. Lunch is provided for all volunteers. If you have tools, bring them with you!

E H?nai `Ai is a profound expression of the centuries-old Hawaiian value of nurturing and feeding our families and community from the abundance of the ?ina or land. From generation to generation, our k?puna or ancestors have exemplified the importance of nourishing relationships. Not just with one another. But with the environment, elements and natural resources that feed the land. Ultimately, when we m?lama `?ina or care for the land, the `?ina feeds and takes care of us.
H?lau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai is one of Kaua`i’s oldest continuous lineages of hula. Founded in 1945 by the late kumu hula, Helen Kaipuwai Waiau, the hula school is presently directed by kumu hula, K?haulani Kekua. Having recently completed its Spring to Summer semester, the h?lau is preparing to embark on another season of perpetuating Hawaiian ancestral knowledge, chant, music and dance. E H?nai `Ai was created as a celebration and sharing of our h?lau’s hula journey over the past year. It is a gesture of appreciation to honor our families and friends who have graciously supported our learning endeavors of hula and Hawaiian cultural practices!
This special `?ina to table cultural experience is being presented in collaboration with Ke?lia Farms. From the venue, to the fresh and delicious menu items, entertainment, performances and more, the h?lau’s goal is to also acknowledge the farmers for their hard work to provide our community with sustenance of healthy food. With fresh grown produce and ingredients, the featured `?ina to table menu is planned to be a special highlight as well! Enjoy the abundance of Kaua`i that will combine ancient and contemporary Hawaiian customs into a beautiful serving of authentic hospitality, delectable fare and culture!

Conference Organizers Announce Special Kama‘aina Rates
(Lihue, Kaua‘i)–Some of the nation’s most influential writers, literary agents and publishers will convene on Kaua‘i this fall to take part in the 4th annual Kaua‘i Writers Conference, at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort in Lihue from Nov 9 through 11, 2018. This three-day conference features talks by renowned authors, intimate small group discussions, workshops and group and individual consultations. Attendees can set up one-on-one pitch sessions and manuscript critiques with top literary agents, which is a rare opportunity for most aspiring writers.
Conference highlights include sessions with Pulitzer Prize winning author Jane Smiley and Hawai‘i-born Kaui Hart Hemmings, whose book, The Descendants, was turned into an Oscar-winning film. A few of the notable conference faculty include Jon Fine, former Director of Author and Publisher Relations for Amazon; Garth Stein, the New York Times best-selling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain; Sara Gruen, author of the runaway bestseller Water for Elephants; and Christina Baker Kline, whose book Orphan Trainspent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list, including five weeks at No. 1, has 3.5 million copies in print, and is under consideration for a movie.
Several of the faculty’s works have led to award-winning films: Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent, Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic, and Jeff Arch’s screenplay Sleepless in Seattle. Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale is set for release by TriStar next January.
Attendees also have the opportunity to take part in pre-conference master classes, which run from Nov. 5 through 8. With courses on fiction, memoir, screenwriting, poetry and more, these intimate workshops offer the opportunity for close personal guidance in small groups with these masters of their genres.
While the conference is drawing larger crowds from the mainland every year, organizers hope both professional and aspiring Hawai‘i-based writers will take advantage of the opportunity to interact with living legends so close to home.
